INTRODUCTION
A raw portrait of youth adrift in a vanished Tokyo. In the heart of Tokyo, two runaways discover that the price of survival is the loss of innocence.
Set in the late 1990s, Scout Man (also known as Pain) captures a gritty era of the Shibuya streets before modern regulations. For this visceral debut, Masato Ishioka earned the New Director Award from the Directors Guild of Japan. The film gained significant international prestige, screening at the Venice International Film Festival (Critics' Week) and the Toronto International Film Festival, and was honored with the Special Jury Grand Prix at Fantasporto (Oporto International Film Festival).
STORY
Mari and Atsushi flee their suburban hometown for the harsh reality of Tokyo. With no resources, they are forced into desperate roles: Mari sells party tickets while Atsushi works as a "scout" for the adult entertainment industry. Their journey paints a haunting picture of a city that demands everything and promises nothing, capturing a specific moment in urban history where survival meant the loss of innocence.
