INTRODUCTION
A mesmerizing portrait of a visionary caught between two worlds. Directed by maestro Kohei Oguri, FOUJITA is a visually stunning exploration of Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita, the most celebrated Japanese artist in the early 20th-century West. This international co-production transcends the traditional biopic, offering a cinematic meditation on art, identity, and the inescapable currents of history.
STORY
The film follows Foujita (Joe Odagiri) through two starkly different eras: his life as the flamboyant "Prince of Montparnasse" in 1920s Paris, and his return to Japan as a "war artist" during World War II. Moving from candlelit salons to misty wartime landscapes, Oguri focuses on the artist’s internal landscape. It is a profound study of the "solitude of the soul" and the enduring power of the creative spirit in a world torn apart.
