Introduction
Based on Miyuki Komatsu's non-fiction novel, this is the first-ever co-production feature film between Japan and Vietnam. The story follows Misao, a 62-year-old Japanese woman teaching in Hanoi, who decides to bring her 82-year-old mother, Shizue, to live with her. The film explores the deep historical ties between the two nations, including Misao’s past in the anti-war movement and the legacy of Japanese soldiers who remained in Vietnam after WWII.
Story
After returning to Japan for her father’s funeral, Misao discovers that her mother is suffering from dementia and can no longer recognize her. Despite strong opposition from her family, who intend to place Shizue in a nursing home, Misao chooses to take her mother back to Vietnam. Wishing to give her mother a peaceful life after a lifetime of hardship in the snowy region of Niigata, Misao begins a new chapter with her in a foreign land.
