INTRODUCTION
An unflinching political thriller reconstructing the five days that shook Japan.
The Seal of the Sun is a courageous dramatization of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Director Futoshi Sato delivers a high-stakes portrayal of the chaos inside the Prime Minister’s residence. Recognized for its historical significance, the film was officially invited to the Montreal World Film Festival, serving as both a gripping cinematic experience and a vital historical document.
STORY
March 11, 2011. Following a record-breaking earthquake and tsunami, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant loses all power, threatening the total evacuation of Tokyo. The film follows the crisis through multiple perspectives—frantic politicians, truth-seeking journalists, and citizens left in the dark. Sato masterfully captures the tension between official narratives and the terrifying reality on the front lines, unsealing the hidden hours of a nation’s greatest crisis.
